Generally speaking this was a entertaining read which tackled a lot of topics politically cogent for the current culture。 Sometimes it felt like the politics got in the way of the storytelling, but I can see this getting better in future books。The central arc of the book wrapped up in a satisfying manner, but then the final chapter dropped a HUGE bomb which creates a GIANT cliffhanger of an ending - which I hated, but also loved。 I am officially on the hook for the next book。

Ooooh ma gawd。 I reaalllyy love this book!!!!Like first of all, LOVE THE LGBTQ+ AND BLACK REPRESENTATION!!!It was really well thought of, hate that it ends with a cliffhanger, but that makes me so excited for the next book!!!

I loved it in the most nostalgic way。 It was like Harry Potter/Charmed but for grown ups。 It was a whole Millennials vibe。 ❤️❤️❤️“Both history and the past are fiction。”This is a multiple POV (my personal favourite) witchy urban fantasy。 It’s addresses lots of issues surrounding feminism, race, trans rights, misogyny, privilege but it doesn’t weigh the plot down or lose the witchy/fantasy aspect。 🧙🔥🔥I loved it and I can’t wait for book 2 The Shadow Cabinet to release because that ending 😭

A wonderful modern witchy story with several twists! An interesting view of the modern world and issues that have sat in the dark for far too long。

Did this book have witches, numerous badass queer characters, and a fun plot that made me excited to read the next installment? Hell yes。 Are fantasy novels my favorite genre? No, so grain of salt this review however you will。

I was expecting/hoping to like this book。 And god dammit, I loved it。 Most ardently。 This is so much deeper than I was expecting and I mean that in multiple ways。 Deep emotions, deep relationships, deep social and gender issues, deep everything。 A group of grown witches (I’m guessing old millennials based on spice girl references) are vastly different but bound to each other because of their duty and love for the sisterhood of the Craft。 An grimm prophecy about a teen throws a wrench in their no I was expecting/hoping to like this book。 And god dammit, I loved it。 Most ardently。 This is so much deeper than I was expecting and I mean that in multiple ways。 Deep emotions, deep relationships, deep social and gender issues, deep everything。 A group of grown witches (I’m guessing old millennials based on spice girl references) are vastly different but bound to each other because of their duty and love for the sisterhood of the Craft。 An grimm prophecy about a teen throws a wrench in their now-quiet lives and starts then down a path that will change things between them forever。 Listen bro, I’m begging you to read this book。 It’s so good, bro, just do it。 I would give it a 5 star review based entirely on the Mean Girls reference leading up to the climax (“get in loser, we’re going shopping”)。 CW/TW: war, bullying, child abuse, death of a loved one, torture, kidnapping, misogyny, transphobia, racism, murder, toxic relationships, infidelity, demonic possession 。。。more

I ended up skipping to the end, just to see where things were going because I was getting annoyed with the back and forth of characters and POV。 And you know what? Cliff hangers stink。 I get it's meant to be a series, but screw that ending and screw this series。 I ended up skipping to the end, just to see where things were going because I was getting annoyed with the back and forth of characters and POV。 And you know what? This was one of my most anticipated books of this year。 I really wanted to like this more but sadly it just didn’t live up to the hype for me。 I felt like it was hard going through the first half but it did picked up towards the end。 I just didn’t click with the writing or the characters as much as I would have liked。 Plus there was one too many Spice Girls references。 However, I will probably pick up the next in the series just because of that cliffhanger of an ending。 Thank you to HarperCollin This was one of my most anticipated books of this year。 I really wanted to like this more but sadly it just didn’t live up to the hype for me。 I felt like it was hard going through the first half but it did picked up towards the end。 I just didn’t click with the writing or the characters as much as I would have liked。 Plus there was one too many Spice Girls references。 However, I will probably pick up the next in the series just because of that cliffhanger of an ending。 Thank you to HarperCollins UK for this advanced copy。 。。。more

Everything about this book was absolutely brilliant。 The politics, plot, character development, twists and turns。 It does end on a cliffhanger which I’m not a fan of but can forgive。 I went in knowing nothing about the author or the book and I highly recommend this approach。

I was so hyped for this book but I struggled through at least half of it。 There just didn't seem to be any actual plot or conflict for so long and I only ended up actually liking the last few chapters I was so hyped for this book but I struggled through at least half of it。 There just didn't seem to be any actual plot or conflict for so long and I only ended up actually liking the last few chapters 。。。more

actually 4。5 stars。 honestly i started it for the witches and stayed for the found family, critiques of white feminism, and surprisingly good cast of trans and queer characters。 unfortunately i did not know this was the start of a trilogy and now i have to wait god knows how long to read the next :(

Lots good but could have been a lot shorter。 Felt like it was trying to be too many books in one。

This was the first book I’ve ever read that had a character with my name in it?! ✨Venice Finch✨ (sister to Paris Finch) is apparently an irritating gossip but also a powerful elemental – but mainly just need to convince my fictional witch-self to not be on Helena’s side… 。。。more

I really wanted more to happen from what it seemed like could have happened at the start of the book and the pacing was a little slow, however I really enjoyed the book itself and everything that went on。I'm giving this book 4 stars, however I feel like with how this book ended and how much it set up it's left me feeling hopeful that the next book could be 5 stars and that this could be a 5 star series, so we shall see! I also thought it was really clever and interesting how important topics were brought up in terms of the real would too, talks of racism, homophobia, transphobia, feminism, sexuality and gender identity, none of these felt to heavy (for me personally, please look after your own mental health) and the way in which they came up also felt very natural and normal which was really refreshing。 By the end of the book I felt very happy in my opinions of people, who I liked, who I hated and also felt the way in which my opinions changed on characters I now feel a lot of negativity towards as we learnt more about them throughout the book and their opinions was really cool。 I also liked how these strong friendships from childhood were dealt with in a way where when someone became toxic that was dealt with, it wasn't ignored and I can't say more without spoilers but I found the changes in friendships really good and also good to look at。I also don't normally like anything to do with motherhood or children in book but the way it was done in this book I didn't mind at all and it never felt like it was taking over from the main story。And that ending, I wasn't surprised, and then i was really surprised!! Overall really enjoyed! 。。。more

I finished this book yesterday and honestly don't know how I feel about this book。 Part of it are rated 3 and other parts I would rate5, so I'm sticking to 4 for now。It started out as a quick, witchy read and the main characters (all female) are really badass。 I loved the premise and the overall story, about demons trying to infiltrate the world。 They nearly succeeded but have been thwarted but they are trying it again。 I loved the overall magic system。A few things just felt out of place for me I finished this book yesterday and honestly don't know how I feel about this book。 Part of it are rated 3 and other parts I would rate5, so I'm sticking to 4 for now。It started out as a quick, witchy read and the main characters (all female) are really badass。 I loved the premise and the overall story, about demons trying to infiltrate the world。 They nearly succeeded but have been thwarted but they are trying it again。 I loved the overall magic system。A few things just felt out of place for me I guess, maybe because I had not been expecting it。 The easy language but hard themes often clashed for me。 At one moment everyone is mourning but a discussion starts about patriarchy, racism, all the themes that are addressed。 And all I could think of at that time was that it wasn't the right moment。 And I think that these things do happen at those times, but it kept pulling me out of the story。I absolutely love Theo and the whole change throughout the book and this part of the story。I think what trouble I had with the book were the stereotypes, men are bad, vengeful white women, racist, neglective parents。。。 And although there often is truth in it, I felt the people behind this were not people anymore but just part of this group and I don't like it when people are judged because of a certain group they belong to and stop being humans in their own right。 I have a feeling I'm not explaining this properly。 And I seriously hope I'm not offending anyone but I felt there was little dialogue。 I'm quite sure the dialogue already happened so many times for some of the characters, but to me as a reader, I missed that dialogue。That being said, the ending was absolutely mind blowing and I need to know what happens next! Can't wait for book 2。 。。。more

it a good story , but it is not what I would expect from a book, that should be combination of discovery of witches meeting the craft。

Don't let this witchy urban fantasy fool you - it is not a light read。 Whilst still fun, Dawson writes a deep story dealing with topics such as transgender acceptance, feminism, loss, grief and finding yourself。 The story centres around four witches, once childhood friends and members of Her Majesty's Royal Coven, who have since grown apart without the gravitational pull of being in HMRC。 At the very heart of the story is Theo, a young trans woman who wants to be a witch。The story tackles transp Don't let this witchy urban fantasy fool you - it is not a light read。 Whilst still fun, Dawson writes a deep story dealing with topics such as transgender acceptance, feminism, loss, grief and finding yourself。 The story centres around four witches, once childhood friends and members of Her Majesty's Royal Coven, who have since grown apart without the gravitational pull of being in HMRC。 At the very heart of the story is Theo, a young trans woman who wants to be a witch。The story tackles transphobia head on (a trigger warning for those who need it)。 There are characters prominent in this story who are transphobic, and are just characterised versions of people that I'm sure we've all dealt with in every day life。 Despite dealing with very real, raw topics, I loved this story。 There are very complex, strong women at the centre of this story, and this story telling doesn't depend on a male's voice。 These women carry the story and aren't in need of saving by anyone but themselves。 There were teenage girls in this story who are given a real sense of agency and importance in the story and their world。 They're all very capable, very flawed people and I really enjoyed all of them (mild spoilers: exceeeeept one of them, and if you keep reading I'm sure you can figure out who)。 There are a lot of pop culture references from the last 30 or so years, so it feels like this sort of story telling may age very quickly (for example, there's a Mean Girls quote that you wouldn't pick up on unless you were familiar with that movie, and I'm sure I missed other references I didn't understand)。 It also definitely doesn't appeal to everyone。 I usually don't love pop culture references in my fantasy, but the inclusion of them in this story really works and brings the story into our world - because the issues that this story deals with are very real in our world。I really can't wait to read the follow up because after that last chapter I need to know more。 Please check trigger warnings before reading this! 。。。more

Super super cool premise, but didn't really love the execution :'( it read very young and felt underdeveloped, with flat characters。 Theo's story was great and I almost wish we'd spent more time with the young ones rather than the adult witches? Oh wow, I really loved this book! I’m not usually into magic or fantasy but I always loved the Harry Potter books and this book is an awesome and updated story falling in that same genre。 I found the plot and the details of the magic world to be clever。 I’m looking forward to the next book and would recommend this to anyone looking for something satisfying and binge-read worthy。
